Washington, DC -- Following Tuesday's Council vote to approve the FY2018 budget, four local education education advocacy groups are launching a thank-you campaign applauding the D.C. Council for investing an additional $20+ million in public schools as part of a 3% increase to the per-pupil funding formula and a four-year 2.2% annual increase to the charter school facilities allotment. Education Reform Now - DC (ERN-DC), Parents Amplifying Voices in Education (PAVE), Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS), and the DC Association of Chartered Public Schools (DCACPS) released the following statement thanking the Council:

"Our public school students, educators, and families in every ward will all benefit from this significant investment in public education. Our Councilmembers are sending an important signal to our students that their education and futures are a top priority for the District.

"This spring, our organizations heard directly from leaders of our public charter schools that per-pupil funding was not keeping pace with rising costs. Over the last two months, thousands of parents, teachers, and school leaders contacted their Councilmembers to explain the urgency of this issue. As the District's economy has grown, costs for public schools are growing -- particularly in terms of personnel salaries, benefits, and facilities upkeep. Without this 3% increase, an individual school's budget could have been six figures short of the amount necessary to provide a quality public education to every child.

"Today, we are launching a thank-you campaign in print and digital media and a thank-you video to express our gratitude to our Councilmembers for making this historic investment in public schools. In particular, we thank Chairman Phil Mendelson, Education Committee Chair Councilmember David Grosso, and Councilmembers Vincent Gray and Mary Cheh for committing resources from their committee budgets to fund this increase. Together, our organizations are proud to thank our elected leaders for standing up for kids."
